FAQ

What is Bordetella?

It has many names, most commonly called “Kennel Cough” also known as “infectious tracheobronchitis”.

It is characterized by a harsh, hacking cough which most people describe as sounding like “something stuck in my dog’s throat. It is analogous to a chest for humans and is only serious in special circumstances. In most cases, it resolves on its own.

Because it is common for Bordetella to be accompanied by at least one other infection agent. It is actually a complex of infections, rather than just one infection.

It is not contagious to humans. Amongst dogs it is fairly contagious depending on stress level, vaccination status, and exposure to minor viruses.

Other factors in contracting “kennel cough”; traveling stress, crowding stress, heavy dust or cigarette smoke exposure, poor ventilation, change in weather conditions.

There are 2 vaccination options:
Injectable and intranasal. It takes 4 days to generate a solid immune response after intranasal . Some dogs will have some sneezing or nasal discharge in the week following intranasal vaccination.

What if I don’t get extra exercises, is my dog ignored?

Absolutely not!! We have an open concept boarding, so they can see all the activity going on around them and someone is in the back cleaning, walking, watering, etc, and we talk to all of our guests when we go by. If someone is having a difficult time adjusting, we stop, go in and sit with them and give treats. We want their stay to be an enjoyable one, after all this their vacation too.

Why did I get charged for Sunday?

Most boarding facilities are closed on Sunday, but as a convenience to our customers, we provide checkout hours on Sunday evenings. As pet owners & lovers ourselves, we understand how eager you are to be reunited with your pet.

Rates are based on the day of boarding, not just an overnight charge. Our staff begins tending to guests in our care very early in the morning, so before you arrive for check out, your pet will have been fed, exercised, had his kennel area cleaned, and in some cases, have been bathed to prepare for going home. It is those services that you pay for when your pet stays until Sunday evening.

What is your taxi service?

We are happy to come and pick up your pets or deliver them to your home. You can be home or not. We are insured and bonded. We can also pick-up or deliver for grooming appointments as well. Ask how we can be of help.

What is your minimum age for boarding a dog or cat?

Our main concern is the welfare of our guests. For this reason, we require them to have at least the series of 3 DHLLP for dogs and 2 FLVP for cats to stay in our condo area. They will be exposed to many other pets and they need these to fight off air-borne diseases. We can take pups and kittens at 8wks of age, but they need to stay in one of our luxury bedroom suites. These are very private and they will not be exposed to other pets.

Can I take a tour of your Resort?

Yes, we encourage this! We take great pains to ensure we provide a first-class, highly sanitary environment. We keep high standards for our staff and they continue education thru seminars. We want you to feel safe and comfortable in selecting our resort for your pet’s vacation.

Here are some suggestions of things to look for when looking for a boarding facility:

  • You should be able to tour any aspect of the facility without a reservation, at any time during business hours.
  • It should smell and be clean.
  • You should be able to request and receive references from current customers or veterinarians.
  • Staff members should be available and capable of answering any of your pet care questions.
  • The facility should require vaccinations from a licensed veterinarian prior to allowing a pet to be boarded.
  • Staff members should own pets and appear kind & friendly toward the animals in their care.
  • Kennels or Suites should be spacious, clean and independent from one another.

My pet is thirsty when she comes home from boarding. Doesn’t she get water when she’s there or won’t she drink?

Pets will frequently become very thirsty from the excitement and stress of seeing their family and loved ones again when they are picked up. It’s natural for them to be thirsty once they get home.
While in our care, pets are monitored carefully for their consumption of fresh water, as well as food and how much they have eliminated. Just like the excitement of coming home, when they first are checked in and settled in their room, they will tend to become very thirsty. We watch this and are sure to provide plenty of fresh water upon check in to get the pet fully hydrated. After the 1st 30 minutes or so, they settle down into the routine, get comfortable and establish regular eating and drinking habits.

Can I bring my pets food?

We provide Wellness food products to our guests. We have canned and dry and several varieties to meet special needs. It is a highly digestible, naturally beneficial food. No artificial anything or byproducts. We will be happy to give you a brochure on it for any questions you might have with it.

If your pet has a special diet or you just don’t want to change their diet, you may bring their food. Our trained associates will follow you instructions to make sure your pet follows his regular diet. We appreciate you putting it in sealed container to ensure freshness.

My pet takes medication or is a diabetic, can you care for them?

We do have Veterinarian Technicians on staff and we are able to do special needs. Guests with controlled diabetes, seizures, arthritis, previous surgeries, thyroid or blindness are all welcome and are staff has experience with these needs.

If your pet has serious issues and is not stable, we feel they would be better off under a veterinarian’s care than in our facility, despite the qualifications of our well-trained staff.

Why does my dog have doggy odor when I pick him up?

We are meticulous in our cleaning and use hospital grade disinfectants to keep them spotless. However pets when stressed or excited excrete more oils in their skins, giving off the “doggy odor”. Even with our ventilation system, when we have many guests, the odor does become more noticeable.

Certain customers may also be more sensitive to pet odors after having not been with an animal for a while. We recommend scheduling a “go home fresh bath” or grooming appointment for a pet before picking up. Nothing is nicer than being greeted by a fluffy, soft, nice smelling friend! Makes the ride home even more enjoyable!!

What happens when a pet becomes ill? Do you have a staff veterinarian?

We do not have a staff veterinarian, but we do keep your vet. Info on file and will contact yours 1st.If your vet. Is from out of town or is unavailable for some reason, we do have access to a clinic 24hours. We maintain relationships with several clinics around the area and we are assured of emergency care whenever it is required.
Our staff is fully trained in proper emergency animal handling techniques, using advanced training methods. They are trained in CPR for pets and have received 1st aide certificates. We keep updated on emergency procedures.

Is someone at the facility 24 hours a day?

We do not have staff here 24 hours a day, but someone is usually here from very early in the am to around 11:00. This time varies at night depending on the amount of pets and how many exercises and if there are any special needs pets. There has been someone here until 1:00 am during weekends. Owners do live nearby and there are precautionary security devices. If there is bad weather in the area, owners do stay on the premises to care for guests and make sure everyone is safe and comfortable.
